What I do

I tell stories orally, I create and direct theatre, clown, I give talks and workshops, and I write. I fully enjoy being on stage, with the audience, in the classroom, at home in front of creative projects and other quirky ideas that come my way. I sing, I dance, I explore laughter, emotion, words and their playfulness, and also how the world moves and the body. I am fascinated by my work. I also collaborate with other artists and wonderful musicians. With all of this, I create and offer performances for adults, families and babies. Thank you for coming closer. Enjoy!

About me

A neighbour used to call me that because she thought I was too thin and set out to fatten me up with freshly whipped cream. She didn’t succeed, but she gave me this name that slipped inside me: Maricuela.

When I’m asked where I live, I could say on a bus, because I spend a lot of time there. When I step away from the wheels, the tours, the circuses and the circle of the audience, I write and roll in a different way.

I design Round Houses, Clown around, I invent Villages with a square, I put in order what has happened, I get angry at the world and try to take away its corners and its thorns.

When I was twelve, someone told me —you’re full of stories—. They hid the tales from me and gave me a novel I never read. There’s nothing like what’s forbidden to awaken the desire to slip into the underground. I went all in. Life’s paradoxes.

For a while, I drew clouds: fluffy, wild and full of bridges. Bridges that connect me with so many people I love, here, there and beyond.

What others say about me

She has that calm yet wildly playful flair of clowns who devour the stage. Maricuela slips through the cracks, tickles your soul, and fills your heart with laughter.
Marieta Monedero, stage director and theatre programmer

Maricuela exists — oh yes, she truly exists! From Teruel she reaches everywhere with her stories, her charm, her smile, and that unique way of telling. Don’t miss her!
Carles Cano, writer and storyteller

Maricuela is a woman straight out of a real fairy tale! With a delightful fragility that is her greatest strength.
Jimena Cavalletti, clown and stage director

Maricuela: A haven of tenderness that can make you laugh to death.
Pablo Albó, writer and oral storyteller

Le public a envie de la voir rester sur scène, et elle, y prenant plaisir, ne veut pas partir (“The audience wants her to stay on stage, and she, simply enjoying it, doesn’t want to leave.)”
Philippe Gaulier, clown, teacher and director

Maricuela’s words reach us without stridency or excess, as subtle as a barely perceptible rain. Before we even realize it, they have taken root in our hearts, unexpectedly bringing forth stories and emotions we will never forget.
Nono Granero, storyteller and illustrator

Tenderness, poetry, humor… For me, watching a Maricuela performance is always inspiring.
Alberto Gamón, illustrator
